Centre Pompidou to display top NFTs in its museum

This is just the start of a new wave of museums collecting and displaying NFT art.

GM. Yes, it's that weekend when football takes over everything, especially if you're a sports fan. Congrats to fans of the Kansas City Chiefs for taking home the trophy, it was quite a match!

Market Update: Super Bowl frenzy

NFT trading remains pretty muted, with just about $30 million in trading volume on Ethereum over the weekend (h/t @hildobby). All eyes were on the Super Bowl, and 2 collections take the spotlight:

  • DigiDaigaku (the NFT collection by Web3 game maker Limit Break) finally dropped its $7 million dollars, 30-second Super Bowl ad. You can watch the full commercial here.

  • "Checks" (Jack Butcher's Open Edition art project) enables its burn mechanism, calling it "Super Burn Sunday"

Both collections have fallen in floor prices after the Super Bowl, a matter of buying the rumor and selling the news.

This Top French Museum Will Exhibit NFTs

💲 What to know: Centre Pompidou (above) will be featuring NFTs from over 16 different collections in a permanent exhibition at its Paris Museum.

Yes, the museum looks like it's still in construction, but it's not.

Centre Pompidou is a top museum in France, housing the biggest collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe. It saw over 1.5 million visitors in 2021 despite the Covid pandemic.

☘️ In the weeds: In total, 18 projects by 13 French and international artists will be included. The NFTs that will be featured in the exhibition include:

  • CryptoPunk #110

  • Autoglyph #25

  • "Hand-Hacked Bouquet #1" by Jill Magid

  • Artworks by Claude Closky, Maxime Marion, Emilie Brout, Fred Forest

According to the curation team, the idea is "to bring together a relevant collection, which could testify to a creative and critical appropriation of a new technology by artists, and how this disrupts and displaces the art ecosystem"

🤑 Why it matters: The traditional art world has been slow to recognize and embrace art NFTs. Part of this is because many trad art collectors are typically "old money" — older, wealthy folks who made it in the real world and are not as in touch with new technologies like crypto. It requires a mindset shift.

There's no doubt in our minds that Centre Pompidou is only the start of a new wave of museums collecting and displaying NFT art. No one wants to be the first, in case it falls flat, but every contemporary art museum will be rushing to have its own NFT exhibition once trailblazers like Centre Pompidou show early success.

Every IRL exhibition increases the awareness of the involved NFT artworks and hence their cultural value. Bullish on CryptoPunks.
