Players are spending millions to dash through a sewer

💲 What to know: Yuga Labs released its new story arc "The Trial of Jimmy the Monkey" last month. On Jan 19, Bored Ape and Mutant Ape NFT holders were able to mint a Sewer Pass and play Dookey Dash, a runner-type game through a sewer.

☘️ In the weeds: This is a new type of launch we haven't seen before: an interactive skill-based mint. It means that the higher your score in the Dookey Dash game, the more likely you'll be able to obtain a rarer item in the next mint on Feb 15.

Effectively, it means skilled players could potentially turn $3,000 (the cost of a Sewer Pass today) into perhaps $10,000 - $30,000 if they're able to obtain the rarest items when the next mint comes. And the ultimate high scorer will get THE KEY (the rare 1-of-1 item which Jimmy swallowed).

Dookey Dash explains why Crypto Twitter has been pretty quiet recently — everyone's trying their hand at the game and aiming for that high score. Each game takes a few minutes and involves navigating your character through a sewer to collect fragments while avoiding obstacles along the way.

You can even buy booster packs (aptly titled "Powershart Packs") using APE coin. For 2 APE (~$11 today), you get a bonus 15% to your score, have a higher chance for rare items to appear and have a faster cooldown for dashing.

And people can't get enough of these booster packs. In the past 3 days, gamers have already spent 70,000+ APE — that's $3.5 million of cold hard cash — to buy these booster packs (h/t @sauron). As a result, APE is up over 20% from its price before the game was live.

🤑 Why it matters: Yuga Labs has been known to push boundaries, and this new story arc and mint proves how it can still wrap its community around its little finger. Skill-based mints are fun (at least for a while) and appeal to people with a competitive streak in them. It's much more interesting than the typical reveal where the rarity of the NFT depends entirely on the God of Fortune blessing you with his luck.

It's also a big-brained move by Yuga to allow APE to be used in the game. It enables new utility for the token, which otherwise has little use except for voting on Ape DAO proposals. It also foreshadows how APE will likely be an integral part of every Yuga Labs mint ahead.

It's not without controversy. Some gamers have observed that by needing a Sewer Pass to play the game, it puts a high financial barrier to entry for new players. Our take is that Yuga Labs gave the Sewer Passes out for free to their community — $3000 is the price the market has set for entry into the ecosystem, not Yuga Labs.
