Porsche's NFT mint failed so badly, it already has a meme

Web3 is a very different beast. It's all about building communities and shared ownership.

GM. A wise man once told us "NFTs are a revolutionary new technology that allows for the creation and ownership of unique digital assets". We tend to believe him. Let's get right into it.

Today we cover:

  • Today's hottest NFTs: Sewer Passes & Toshis

Market Update: Sewer Passes & Toshies

It was a pretty quiet day for NFTs. The only collection catching a real bid was the Sewer Pass, with over 2,300 ETH in 24-hour trading volume. Sewer Passes are close to their all-time high price (2.6 ETH now), showing the power of the Yuga Labs brand.

TOSHIES was a newly launched collection by legendary pixelartist Chuckchee. However, the high demand for the mint created a gas war that led to 14,000 failed transactions and wasted gas. Brings back memories of the 2021 gas wars.

Porsche's NFT Mint Failed So Badly There's Already A Meme

πŸ’² What to know: Porche launched its NFT collection this week, focusing on its iconic 911. Each NFT was priced at 0.911 ETH ($1,400).

Unfortunately, the mint did not go as expected. Less than 2,000 NFTs were sold out of the total supply of 7,500.

☘️ In the weeds: Porsche's NFT gives holders "a variety of customization options" as well as specially-selected "money can't buy" experiences. Holders will be able to select from three predefined directional options (Performance, Heritage, Lifestyle), eventually leading to a unique style and rarity for every NFT. Little further details have been released, however.

It's clear that the team working on this was tone-deaf:

#1 When the mint price of 0.911 ETH was announced, there was an uproar over how expensive it was especially in the current market conditions. The team didn't bulge.

#2 Later on, they announced they were going to cut the supply and stop the mint. However, the mint is still open till tomorrow.

Already, people are meme-ing this and someone launched their own NFT called "Poorsche"

πŸ€‘ Why it matters: Porsche is a big and well-known brand. It's heartening to see it experiment with NFTs. However, Web3 is a very different beast from the traditional world. It's all about building communities and shared ownership.

The way the launch was conducted suggests that the Porsche team is still stuck in the corporate mindset β€” attempting to make a profit on the mint before even building a community and delivering value to it. If all 7,500 NFTs were sold out, it would have netted Porsche a cool $10M. More than enough to fund the development work and team.

Some have suggested that it would have been better for Porsche to do a free (or cheaper) mint first and build up to a more exclusive, limited-edition mint in the future as it establishes its roots in the space. We think this is quite a sensible strategy.
